AFM for a better pool filtering - best replacement of quarz sand
12.01.2023

Here's an overview of the latest and revolutionary filler for swimming pool filtration tanks.

It is impossible to achieve clean and safe water in the pool without mechanical and chemical treatment and filtration. The question is not only in the aesthetic appeal of a pool with clean transparent water. A pool with ineffective water treatment and disinfection system can be dangerous and be a carrier of harmful pathogenic bacteria and microorganisms. The degree of mechanical filtration depends on the properly chosen capacity of the pool filter and the quality of the backfill used. The traditional backfill material is quartz sand. But traditional does not mean the best, because the market now offers an activated filtering material that is superior several times in all respects.

Production cycle:

The basic material used is special green glass, as this was the only material found to have the required chemical and physical properties.

Perfect hydraulic flow characteristics are achieved through the proper shaping of sand grains in the form of balls and plates, without splinters. The safety and
quality of the production process is confirmed by ISO certification. Pool equipment and filtration systems work efficiently with this backfill.

Prepared backfill undergoes an activation process during which a mesoporous structure is formed on the surface of each grain of sand. This structure has a large catalytic surface that prevents the formation of biofilm on the top of the filtering material.

The top of one ton of quartz sand or conventional glass fill is 3,000 m2, while the top of one ton of material is more than 1,000,000 m2.

Advantages of using activated material filter material in the pool filter:

  • AFM provides at least 35% better mechanical filtration of the water passing through the filter. At a flow rate of 20 m/h, the degree of water filtration using material is on average 20 microns, and can be further improved by using coagulants down to 1 micron.
  • The high degree of mechanical filtration reduces the usage of disinfection chemicals by 25-30%.
  • No more biofilm on the surface. It’s properties and degree of filtration remain unchanged for many over one decade (claims that are backed by the manufacturer), while on the other hand, the backfill of Quartz sand forms a biofilm of bacteria after 2-3 days of its operation, further, 280-365 days later, in the filter formed are channels and thickening, reducing its efficiency at times;
  • The smell of pool water chlorine is significantly reduced due to the absence of biofilm on the filtering material. The bacteria from the biofilm on the silica sand converts ammonia from the water into urea, which in turn reacts with chlorine to form chloramines that create the unpleasant smell of chlorine in the water and pool;

There are several grain sizes of AFM material. Follow the instructions of your sand filter to ensure best quality of filtration.

Today, over 100000 swimming pools in Europe use this material as backfill for filtration systems. We have also tested its effectiveness on dozens of pools of our customers. The main difference in the cost of the AFM and quartz sand is more than compensated by better filtration process, reduced usage of chemicals and lack of need for annual replacement of the backfill and filter maintenance. We strongly recommend you consider this filter backfill when selecting your pool equipment and system.
